As this year’s Thanksgiving season rolls around, I’ve been reflecting a bit on the good things I have in this life. Of course there are the material things (my camera, phone, etc.), but the more important things I thought about carried much more meaning. I have my students, friends, and family..all people who care about, and support me. Through all this support, I have felt loved, cherished, and needed. With today being the Thursday of all Thursdays, I wanted to pay homage to a big source of that support..someone who doesn’t always get the credit she deserves, my grandma, Mimi.
I’m thankful for my Mimi because she put up with me when I called her by her first name, Jane (and other variations of it). Teenage Alexis was a handful (as I can imagine I still am), but my Mimi always responded with grace (and maybe an eye roll or two lol). As an adult, I am headstrong and steadfast, so I can only imagine what I must’ve been like with an excess of hormones coursing through my body. If I had to guess, I would say pretty similar to one of those remote control cars that just keeps slamming itself into the wall over and over again…probably..
I’m thankful she supported me when I was finding myself, both my sexuality, and who I am as a creator. When I was 20 I came out as gay to my entire family, and I’ll never forget she was right there in the front row cheering me on. With outstretched arms (and lots of questions), she fully embraced both me and my girlfriend. When I was 22 and came out as bi, she was there again (maybe this time with more questions, but all with the sole purpose of educating herself for my sake).
When I started Verylex back in 2016, my Mimi was my first subscriber. Later that day, she logged into my grandpa’s computer so I could have 2. To this day she texts me when I have a new post, and lets me know she read and loved it. I’m hoping she’s reading this now.
There are lots of things I’m thankful for, but one of the top things on my list is someone who deserves to hear it more often. Mimi, I am so thankful for you. You have treated me with nothing but kindness, and a bit of well deserved sass. Growing up, I felt fully supported in any and all endeavors, and part of that comes from you. I love you, and can’t wait to see you!
Happy Thanksgiving my friends! Make sure to tell those around you why you’re thankful for them, and try to do something nice for someone! Today, like Christmas, should be a time for giving, so take advantage!
